Nik B., the featured designer in our latest, Day in the Life: Senior Designer says that while she is happily working as a visual designer, she didn’t always know that is what she wanted to do. Nik encourages students to “try to figure out what you actually love.” We join Nik as she gives a quick peek into her role as Senior Designer, where, with her team at Monsoon Company she designed responsive websites and applications for a broad range of industries and devices. Moving from a designer role into a management role is not an easy transition. You essentially go from designing, to managing designers. In the corporate design world, we're expected to make that transition with no coaching, and with no problems. Many end of stumbling through the uncomfortable transition, learning the hard way how to manage by making many mistakes. Here are three things to remember when making the transition to further your career: 1. Understand Your Job Understand that your job probably isn’t to design anymore. It is probably now more project management and client relationships. Take care of the bigger picture, and support designers in their design-focused role. You can monitor a designer’s projects and progress, but don’t micro-manage. Don’t get involved in a designer’s day-to-day tasks. Your performance isn’t measured by your solo achievements anymore. Instead, it is now measured by your team’s achievements. It is now your job to inspire your team to do great design work. 2. Communicate Communicate your role. Tell them what your job responsibilities are, as a manger, on a regular basis. Just like the designers give you an update on what they’re working on, you should give them an update on what you’re working on as well. Communicate company goals. Understanding the big picture helps designers understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. Tell them about potential new clients. Tell them how much money the company made last quarter, and what you’re on track to make this quarter. This is inspiring. Communicate issues. If issues arise, you have to communicate in a clear, constructive way. Don’t just shut off. Talk to me! The passive aggression and avoidance just makes things worse. Confront me like an adult, and like a boss! In my opinion, those not afraid of confrontation make better bosses. 3. Motivate Make your designers feel appreciated, respected, and supported. Keeping up office morale, is a big part of managing a team! Morale has a huge effect on productivity and general wellbeing. Low morale can lead to subpar concentration, and increased mistakes. It can also lead to a higher employee turnover rate, and general absenteeism. Be your team’s biggest advocate. Give them credit where credit is due. Managing a team is a lot like a relationship. Get to know your designers, understand their strengths and weaknesses, help to highlight their strengths, understand their life goals, keep their best interests at heart, and never stop supporting them. 🚨 This video is made for fun, and is not a depiction of the real process. It's satire. Conversations like this are more common than you think. Having a Design Process is essential to successfully complete briefs from a client. Check out more at 🤍thedesign.school - Notes from the video below: What's the Deadline? Make sure you can meet the deadline by asking about it up front! What's the budget? Work out how long you should take to complete the design work - by working out your day rate and putting that alongside the budget for the design work you can work out how much time you should spend on the Design. Where is the asset going to be used? Understanding if the design asset is going to Print, being used on Social Media, Or as an animated video - will completely change the approach you take in designing it. So be sure to know where your design will be used before working on it. What are the deliverables in this design project? Make sure you know what assets you need to create so that you don't miss any out when it comes to submitting them to the client. Ask the client if they have seen any designs that they have liked recently? The client usually has a good idea of things that will work well for their company. They may have seen other companies' social posts etc that they want to emulate. Thumbnails Doing super quick sketches of your design work can help solve design problems early on. Stage One: Mockup Using the thumbnail sketches, the notes on the brief, the clients reference imagery, the understanding of how the asset will be used and how long you should take to make it. You can now start designing the asset. This is version one - the design should be a complete design when you submit it to the client. Stage Two: Revisions You will get feedback from the client - you should make sure you go through each feedback note and implement it into your design. Send this to the client. Stage Three: Export You will have some more feedback notes from the client - hopefully minor ones. Complete these and package up for delivery Extra Tip: End your email with ' If there's any other design work I can help with, let me know' This gives your client the knowledge that you are available for future work and more often than not it helps land consistent work from your client.

Skilled in Adobe's Creative Suite across digital and print media, Chris not only counts iTWire as a very satisfied customer, but talks to us about graphic design's past, present and future. Graphic design. I remember getting into it myself as a youngster using DOS-based graphic design software that existed before Windows became the standard user interface on PCs, in the days when PageMaker was the software in popular use on Macs. Then, when Windows 3.0 rolled around, I remember using Corel Draw 2.0, which did everything in "wireframe" style that required you to press one of the function keys so you could see what the "rendered" version looked like, before Corel Draw 3.0 got rid of that requirement. Fast forward to 2020, and graphic design has accelerated at warp speed, with Adobe's recent Max 2020 conference, which you can watch here, 🤍 an absolute tour-de-force that has taken graphic design from the world of sci-fi into absolute science fact, and those who have mastered Adobe's Creative Suite can certainly create some absolute magic for anyone's eyes. So, with graphic design an integral part of today's world, and with iTWire employing the impressive skills of experience senior graphic designer Chris Tysoe, 🤍 we decided to interview him on video to find out more from his perspective. Equipped with a Bachelor's Degree focused in Graphic Design from the Sydney Graphics College, Chris spent over a decade working as a senior graphic designer for the Manpower Group, and is now the CEO of his own company, Strategic Brand Design. 🤍 The video interview with Chris is above, as is a summary of the topics we spoke about. I started by introducing Chris and welcoming him to the program, then asking him to share not only what sparked his love of graphic design, but which program he started with all those years ago. We talked about the Adobe Max 2020 conference and its mind-blowing developments, along with features that have impressed Chris in some of the recent versions, along with profound changes he has experiences and enjoyed. Chris shared his history and experiences in the world of graphic design, and then we spoke about augmented reality, and how this might change design as we know it in the future. We talked about graphic design of years gone by, and what era of design is Chris' favourite, as well as where graphic design might end up by 2030. I asked Chris to share great advice he has received in life, what companies should look for when engaging a graphic designer, and his final message to iTWire viewers and readers. If you'd like to know more, please take a look at the video interview above!

For, the past 12 years the graphic design industry has taken me down various roads of creativity, imagination, attractive visual artistry, and working with great people who share my same passion. The various avenues of design include: website building, logo-making, vinyl-cutting, screen printing, photo enhancing, illustrating, laser engraving, and apparel designing....to name a few. I have also assisted others to utilize their ideas and passions in creating and printing marketing materials for self-promotion or designing uniforms for the neighborhood baseball team. Through my experiences I have strengthened my design skills, grew an understanding of the marketing guidelines, and fed my enjoyment for learning new programs and methods. To me, graphic design is the perfect marriage of technology and imagination, ultimately creating a world that is visually pleasing and easy to partake in.
