This procedure uses a small camera called an endoscope to visualise inside the ear canal whilst a small suction tube is inserted to gently remove ear wax. We can also use other tools to remove hard ear wax, foreign bodies, peeling dead skin or for ear infection removal. All the ear wax cleaning videos you see on our channel are carried out by our ear wax specialists Mr Rhys Barber and Mr Taylor Green. It helps to prevent ear infection and helps with ear cleaning by picking up any dirt or debris that accumulates in the ear canal. Normally this ear wax would fall out of the ear taking any dirt or debris with it. How to remove ear wax? Many people use q-tips/cotton buds for ear wax removal at home this is one of the worst things you can put into the ear as this can lead to an increased ear wax buildup or in extreme cases impacted ear wax. The best way to remove ear wax is to let your ears clean themselves and not to put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears! How do I know if I have an earwax blockage? If you experience a change in your hearing, discomfort in the ear or jaw or a feeling of fullness in the ear canal you may have an ear wax blockage. Our advice is to speak to your Doctor or local Audiologist who can take a look in your ears and assess whether ear cleaning is needed. We went to the Clear Ear Clinic in Oxford to get our ears cleared using a procedure called microsuction. "It's done with a tiny vacuum that hoovers everything that's in the ear gently," ENT nurse practitioner Sarah Elliott told Business Insider. Wax is the body’s natural protection of the ear canal. But too much of it can cause damage, including infections or pressure in the ear. "Wax is composed of three things: dead skin, the oil that everyone secretes onto their skin called sebum, and a specialised form of sweat called cerumen," ENT surgeon Simon Gane told Business Insider. Ears have a natural clearance mechanism to get rid of the excess wax. But sometimes using earplugs, cotton buds, or drops will prevent this system from doing its job, leading to more buildup. There are also other factors that determine one’s wax buildup, such as genetics, and the size of one's ear canal. A microsuction for both ears at the Clear Ear Clinic costs £85, and takes around 15 minutes. Doctors recommend getting your ears checked annually. The Most DANGEROUS & Least Effective Ear wax Removal Tool EVER! | Video Endoscope Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews a video endoscope designed for earwax removal. Website: 🤍 Clinic Website: 🤍 There is no shortage of earwax removal tools on the market. You have Eardrops, Q-Tips, car keys, crazy corkscrew tools, and even vibrating suction devices. But perhaps the most intriguing device that you can find online is the video endoscope. A video endoscope is a camera with a light that lets you look into dark areas, like your ear canal, so you can see what's inside. Some companies have added wire loops to the end of these devices so you can attempt to remove your own earwax. Advertisements from these companies show a party-like atmosphere of young adults removing their own earwax with this tool. Since these companies clearly indicate that the self removal of earwax using a video endoscope is safe, fun, and effective, I decided to review this product myself. I invited back Retired Nurse Practitioner, Heather Wen, who you may recognize from my Ear Candling video. Heather always has plenty of earwax for us to remove and she wanted to see if this video endoscope would do the trick so she could stop coming to see me. After multiple attempts, Heather was unsuccessful using the Video Endoscope to remove her earwax. It had a few main issues, First, it didn't help her see her earwax because the camera is too big. There wasn't enough room in her canal to insert the camera and still remove the earwax. Second, the metal loop on the Video Endoscope move around too much. Removing earwax is difficult with the proper instrumentation, let alone a flimsy wire attachment. Since Heather was unsuccessful, I decided to see if I could remove some of her earwax. I was able to get some out, but only because I knew how to maneuver the wire loop without looking at what I was doing. Some earwax came out, but there was still plenty left behind. However, since I'm a licensed Audiologist with years of training and experience under my belt, I probably am not the best representation of a friend or family member using this tool to remove your earwax. This is why we brought in my front office assistant Kris. Kris has ZERO experience removing earwax so she is the perfect representation of a friend or family member. Upon attempting the removal of earwax for less than 1 minute, Kris scraped Heather's ear canal and jammed the earwax into her ear canal. This resulted in an abrasion on Heather's ear canal, and an irritated, albeit non-punctured, eardrum. The moral of the story is that attempting to remove your own earwax, or having a friend or family member attempt to remove your earwax is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Earwax removal should only be attempted by a licensed professional like an Audiologist, Hearing Instrument Specialist, Otologist, or Otolaryngologist. While using a Video Endoscope to remove your own earwax may seem like a good idea, and great way to save some money. It is really just another dangerous tool that I would consider even more dangerous than Q-Tips for removing earwax. So while you migh save a little money buying products like these to remove your earwax, you may also require expensive surgery if you accidentally make a mistake.

Ear Wax : Introduction Earwax is a waxy material produced by sebaceous glands inside the ear. It cleans, lubricates and protects the lining of the ear by trapping dirt and repelling water. Earwax is slightly acidic and has antibacterial properties. Without earwax, the skin inside your ear would become dry, cracked, infected or waterlogged and sore. Earwax can be wet or dry, hard or soft. Soft earwax is more common in children and hard earwax is more likely to cause problems. Everyone makes ear wax but the amount and type are genetically determined just like hair color or height. Some people have ear canals that are smaller than average or shaped in a way that makes it difficult for the naturally occurring wax to get out of the canal causing wax impactions. Some people produce more earwax than others. It usually falls out of your ear gradually, in small pieces or flakes. Sometimes, earwax can build up and harden, creating a blockage called a "plug". As well as causing discomfort, an earwax plug can also cause temporary hearing loss because it blocks your ear canal. Once the blockage is removed, your hearing will improve. EARWAX CAUSES Some people are naturally more susceptible to developing a blockage in their ear, for various reasons. Blockage, or impaction, also occurs when the wax gets pushed deep within the ear canal. Earwax blockage affects about 6% of people and is one of the most common ear problems doctors see. Your risk of developing problems from a build-up of earwax is increased if you have: • narrow ear canals or ear canals that aren't fully formed • a lot of hair in your ear canals • bony growths in the outer part of your ear canal – these are called osetomata • a skin condition of your scalp or preauricular area • hard wax • a history of recurrent impacted earwax • repeated ear infections Elderly people are more at risk of having earwax problems because earwax becomes drier with age. Impacted earwax If you produce a lot of earwax, further blockages may occur, even after you've had an earwax plug removed. Further blockages are also likely to occur if you have particularly narrow ear canals that become blocked more easily. Your chances of developing an earwax blockage are also increased if you: • use cotton buds – they can push earwax deeper into your ear and pack it together harder, creating an earwax plug • wear a hearing aid or earplugs, which can stop earwax falling out of your ear naturally Symptoms of earwax build-up Earwax doesn't usually cause problems, but a build-up of earwax can lead to a blocked ear or fullness sensation, ear pain and hearing loss. Too much earwax can also cause other symptoms, including: • Ringing in the ear • Itching or drainage from the ear canal • vertigo or Dizziness Treating earwax build-up In most cases, earwax falls out on its own, so there's no need to remove it. However, if it's completely blocking your ear canal and causing hearing loss, it may need to be removed. Indications for earwax removal : • Difficulty in examining the full tympanic membrane • Otitis externa • Wax occlusion of the external ear canal • As part of the workup for conductive hearing loss • Prior to taking the impression for hearing aid fitting • Suspected external ear canal or middle ear cholesteatoma • As part of the follow-up to canal wall down mastoidectomy • As part of grommet insertion or middle ear surgery • Patient request Methods of Earwax Removal : Eardrops- Eardrops can be used to soften and loosen the earwax. Eardrops should not be used if you have a perforated eardrum . Ear irrigation- Ear irrigation may be recommended if your earwax blockage persists, even after using eardrops. It involves using a pressurised flow of water to remove the build-up of earwax. Microsuction – where a special suction device is used to remove the earwax under a microscope. The procedure is quick, safe and painless. Aural toilet – where an instrument called a Jobson Horne probe is used. A Jobson Horne probe is a thin metal instrument with a small ring at one end that the specialist can use to remove earwax from your ear canal. Complications of Earwax Blockages • Perforated eardrum • Middle-ear infection • External-ear infection (swimmer's ear )

Everyone naturally produces earwax. It’s a completely normal process, and the wax is beneficial because it can clean your ear. But sometimes the wax can build up, which can cause irritation, muffled hearing, or hearing loss. When that happens, it’s time to see a doctor. Insider’s Caroline Aghajanian, Joe Avella, and Mikala Jones-Fielder visited Dr. Geoffrey Trenkle, an otolaryngologist at the Los Angeles Center for Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy, to learn more about earwax and have their ears professionally checked. Dr. Trenkle can safely remove earwax by using either a curette or a vacuum device. He suggests to never try over-the-counter options to remove earwax and to stop using Q-tips because they may cause a perforated eardrum, which can lead to a risky surgery.
