It seems like every other day we’re confronted with a new technological wonder that everybody is flocking to, but amidst all the hype there’s a quiet trend towards one of the oldest audio technologies available: vinyl records. But are these relics actually the peak of musical experience, or are we just riding the nostalgia train? In 2022, vinyl records surpassed CDs as the best-selling music physical format. This is the first time it has happened since 1987. Why the sudden shift? Why did a medium that was kept around mostly because of nostalgia and novelty now take back its place at the top? Invented in 1948, vinyl records became the definitive way of listening to music in just a couple of years and stayed that way for decades. With the invention of cassette tapes, they gradually became less and less popular. Cassettes were just smaller and more convenient, which contributed to their popularity. Vinyl stayed around but the glory days were long gone. With the invention of the internet, then streaming, physical media in general took a backseat for a long time. A few enthusiasts and audiophiles still preferred the warm sound of the vinyl to the alternatives. This community kept the medium alive and even somewhat directly caused the vinyl revival. The bigger cover art that you can display at your home, the joy of going to a record store to talk about music and hunting rare second-hand vinyl records as a hobby all contributed to the recent comeback. They are still less popular than streaming but are widely considered to be the most involved and interesting way of listening to music. We have musically explored the 1970s in the past covering Radio Hits, Disco, Funk, Soul & Hawaiian from that decade. However we have yet to venture into the area of Album Rock, the songs most commonly heard on the era's new stereo FM radio. These stations were the Spotify of that time exposing listeners to longer album versions of hits and an album's non-singe tracks. Neither of these made their way onto conventional AM radio due to the time and hit restrictions of these stations. FM radio also helped significantly boost the sales of albums to consumers who may have previously only purchased a 45 single. This increase in revenue also assisted in artist expression because record companies started to open up budgets for concept albums, elaborate artwork and more extensive studio sessions. Included in this first episode are many standards of FM radio that are now heard on Classic Rock radio and streaming channels. We have included a couple of the more obscure tracks and will increase the occurrence of these as this series progresses. Mahalo for watching and experiencing the music with us! For most people wanting to get into vinyl records it's about having that extra connection to their favourite artists or another way to appreciate some music. You can't hug an mp3 after all! Unfortunately there is a fair bit of snoberry around vinyl and all the (sometimes cool) analog gear that we use to play our records. It can be an intimidating environment for someone who didn't grow up in the age of home hi-fi systems. We think that's crap. We also don't subsribe to the idea that you have to spend big or ruin your record with a dodgy turntable. We compare some of the most commonly reviewed and recommended turntables online and recommend what we think is a contender for the best value turntable on the market aimed at those just gettig started with vinyl. In the Video - We look at the Debut Carbon Evo from Pro-ject Audio, probably the most reviewed and recommended turntable on youtube that is sometimes billed as "the best starter or beginner turntable" - We chat about the infamous suitcase record players from Crossley, Vitrola and the rest. The most criticised piece of vinyl related gear on the market - And we recommend a cheap, affordable turntable that is actually designed for those new to vinyl that sounds good and won't ruin your records, the AT-LP60X range from Audio Technica. If you'd like to learn more check out 🤍 You can also follow us on instagram and facebook 🤍bendigo_vinyl If you did like the video we would love it if you could hit like and maybe even subscribe to see what we are up to for more guides, reviews and chats about vinyl records, vinyl accessories, gear and of course the music itself. We'd love to hear what you'd like to see next or what you think of the turntables we discuss in the video if you happen to have one. See you when you flip the side, Paul & Sam

This video is the second of three shows digging into the polyester decade of the 1970s. In this installment, Z-Bear delves into the Radio Hits that showcased the migration of Classic Rock from the alternative FM and college radio stations to the mainstream AM ones. This era was well known for the birth of the personal listening device. The great grandfather of the iPod was the AM transistor radio which allowed pocket sized portability of music for the first time in history. Even though listeners also enjoyed other styes of the era such as Disco and Funk, Rock really dominated when it came those small carry along radios. Enjoy the retro tunes and mahalo for watching!
