If you think about it, the population of Norway is 5 million 747 thousand people. And those people speak 3 official language of Norway: Nynorsk Bolmål And Sami So if you are not willing to study Norwegian and start learning it well in advance - you better don’t move to Norway. 📍 2 - Adjusting to the new climate I’m getting this question a lot - how can you handle winter in Norway? My usual answer is - I can handle it with no issues and with a great pleasure! 📍 3 - You are weather dependant Like you can’t work or you can’t create when the sun doesn’t shine. That’s different. And you’ll have to change your attitude I’m afraid. As the weather in Norway might change 10 times a day - especially autumn and spring time. And it’s gona be much shorter days winter time. 📍4 - You don’t like outdoor activities. In Norway people spend their time outdoors all year around. Summer is ideal for hiking, winter is perfect for skiing and snowboarding. The house is just a hub to pack your lunch and discuss your future outdoor adventures. 📍5 - You will have to work hard. Much harder than you worked in your country of origin. If in your own country you are native, in any new country you will be a guest for a long time. And you will need to invest into society first to be accepted there and win your own place there 📍 6 - You will miss your local food and ingredients In Norway you will have to learn how to cook from local ingredients. Norwegian ingredients are not bad at all! Check local supermarkets in Norway and find exactly what you like 📍 7 - You will not party as you used to in Norway I repeat it’s not a party culture! Party in Norway is happening different way - every Saturday or Sunday if you go hiking you’ll meet a lot of people doing the same. That’s where Norwegian party and social life happening - outdoors! Also we are having dinners with friends here. But that dinner will be with much less alcohol compare to some other European countries and most probably by 10pm everyone will go back home. 📍8 - You are smoking It’s bad anywhere in the world but in Norway it’s also insanely expensive. Let’s have a look at maths: 1 pack of Marlboro red is NOK = US Dollars If you smoke even a half pack a day, 1 year of smoking in Norway will cost you about €2 555 📍9 - You will miss your family and friends That’s 100% and you cannot do much about it. But remember, this is your choice to change the country so you are the only to be responsible for your decision. Advice here: regular visits - both sides combined with modern technology- face time, teams. I know it’s not the same but it’s a part of the process and you have to be prepared for it. 📍10 - If you like complaining to strangers- especially on the bus, if you like judging people and always know best how they should behave and what they should wear, if you can’t deal with your curiosity and keep asking everyone around why they don’t have kids yet or when they are planning to get married and it seems it too late anyway - you better don’t come to Norway. 📍 11 - You will never be Norwegian. Let me put it this way: you will never adjust yourself 100%. You’ll always have an accent - if you are moving the countries at the age of 20 and above - 99% you’ll have an accent. This performance is from Melodi Grand Prix 2023, courtesy of NRK. Alessandra Mele is a Norwegian-Italian artist and songwriter. The 20-year-old has lived most of her life in Italy, but decided to move to Norway two years ago after finishing high school as she wanted to get closer to her Norwegian family and to develop her interest in music. From a very young age she began to sing, dance and cook with her mother to the sound of Frank Sinatra. She took part in her first singing competition when she was 6 years old and won it all with the ABBA classic Dancing Queen. She loves being on stage and feels that this is the place where she can be herself. The song Queen of Kings is about daring to be yourself and coming out stronger after difficult times in life. As a tourist I was quite irked by how expensive Norway was, especially groceries. So, I was really keen on finding the reason. It’s because as an egalitarian society, Norway has really good wages for those who work in the food industry. Which makes groceries almost 27% more expensive than the US as well. In fact, food prices in Norway are 54% higher on average than other EU countries. Besides the reasons listen in the video, there are also a few more reasons: - Toll taxes which also makes produce from within Norway more expensive. - High customs on food that can be produced within Norway - Climate and landscape. - It’s expensive in absolute terms but the prices are regulated to fit the local economy and the Norwegians’ spending power. Joint press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, 30 May 2023. 🗣 | NATO Secretary General: Prime Minister Gahr Støre, Dear Jonas, It is great to see you again, it’s good to be back in Oslo, and a pleasure to be the guest of the Norwegian government. Last time Norway held a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, you were the host. And thank you for inviting us again. And also for your leadership and personal commitment to our Alliance. Norway makes valuable contributions to our shared security. Norwegian forces serve in our multinational battlegroup in Lithuania. You contribute to our air-policing missions. And you play a key role in the High North. And you host important exercises as demonstrated with the visit of the USS Gerald Ford just now. Today in our meeting, we addressed Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine. Norway provides significant aid. I welcome that you have committed to a five-year assistance program. This is something that really makes a difference. With military support. As well as financial and humanitarian assistance. And this is something which we all very much appreciate. I am confident that with the support of NATO Allies, Ukraine can continue to liberate occupied land. And prevail as a sovereign, independent nation. At our NATO Summit in Vilnius we will demonstrate our long-term commitment to Ukraine. The war has made clear Norway’s essential role as a major energy provider for Europe. And you, Jonas, have played a key role in driving NATO’s work on protecting our critical undersea infrastructure. Including energy pipelines. We also discussed the need to invest more in defence. I welcome the commitment by Norway to reach the 2% target by 2026. I expect that when we meet in Vilnius, we will agree a new Defence Investment Pledge. Where 2% of GDP for defence is a floor, not a ceiling. Because we need to recognize that 2% is a minimum to meet the obligations as a NATO Ally. We also discussed Sweden’s accession to NATO. Sweden will become a member. All Allies have invited them to join. And their security is already stronger as a result. I am in close and constant contact with Turkish authorities, to ensure that Sweden becomes a full member as soon as possible. This is important for Norway’s security. It is important for the whole Nordic and Baltic region. And it is important for NATO. Let me also address Kosovo. We strongly condemn the unprovoked attacks against KFOR troops in northern Kosovo, which led to 30 peace-keepers being wounded. Such attacks are unacceptable and must stop. KFOR, the NATO forces, will take all necessary actions to maintain a safe and secure environment for all citizens in Kosovo. And we will continue to act impartially, in line with our United Nations mandate. We have decided to deploy 700 more troops from the operational reserve force for Western Balkans. And to put an additional battalion of reserve forces on higher readiness, so they can also be deployed if needed. These are prudent steps to ensure that KFOR has the forces and capabilities it needs to fulfill its mandate. Violence sets back Kosovo and the entire region, and puts Euro-Atlantic aspirations at risk. Both Pristina and Belgrade must take concrete steps to de-escalate the situation. Refrain from further irresponsible behavior. And engage in the EU-facilitated dialogue, which is the only way to lasting peace. So once again, thank you so much, Jonas, for hosting us, and for a very substantive and fruitful meeting.
